DDPM warns Phuket City residents as Bang Yai Canal rises
A Cell Broadcast warning urged residents in low-lying and canal-side areas to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rain raises water levels in Bang Yai Canal.
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued a Cell Broadcast flood warning for Phuket City on Thursday, 29 October 2026, as rising water levels in Bang Yai Canal increased the risk of flooding in surrounding communities.
The DDPM urged residents in low-lying and canal-side areas to monitor the situation and prepare to move belongings to higher ground. It also advised people to guard against electric shocks and pay particular attention to vulnerable residents.
The warning followed persistent rainfall and water flowing into the canal from nearby areas. Phuket’s Chalong and Rawai subdistricts were also identified for monitoring over the following 24 hours because continued rain could cause rapid rises in water levels and flash flooding.
The alert formed part of a wider flood-risk assessment covering 10 provinces. The Hydro-Informatics Institute warned that prolonged heavy rain could lead to flash floods, rapid run-off, overflowing waterways and flooding in urban areas.
Residents needing assistance were advised to contact district officials, subdistrict and village leaders, local government representatives or community leaders. Phuket City Municipality’s disaster prevention and mitigation office can be reached on 076-211111 or 199.
