Officials clear Bang Tao beachfront restaurant encroachment
The operation, carried out yesterday (Apr 29), targeted areas where restaurants had extended their operations onto the sand, placing tables and chairs on land designated for public use.
Officials cleared restaurant seating and temporary structures from Bang Tao Beach in Phuket on April 29 after finding businesses had extended operations onto public sand. The crackdown targeted tables, chairs and service areas set up on state land, while confirming the restaurants themselves were on legally held land behind the beach.
The action was ordered by Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthiwat and coordinated by Vice Governor Adul Chuthong. Officers from the Phuket Provincial Administration, Thalang District Office, Cherng Talay Tambon Administrative Organisation and the Phuket Forestry Centre joined the inspection.
Inspection documents public-land violations
During the inspection, officials recorded evidence of encroachment and identified a number of unauthorised temporary structures on the beachfront.
Authorities said those illegal structures were dismantled and removed from the public area. No permanent buildings were demolished, and businesses operating within their legal boundaries were not affected.
Phuket Provincial Palad Rungruang Thimabutr said the operation was part of an ongoing policy to regulate beach use and protect public access.
“The beachfront must remain accessible to everyone,” he said. “While businesses may operate on legally held land, they are not permitted to extend onto public sand for private gain.”
Officials said similar enforcement will continue at other beach areas across the island, and legal action will be taken against future encroachment on public land.
