Overnight closures at three Phuket underpasses extended to June 14

Nightly closures at the Bang Khu, Samkong and Darasamut underpasses in Phuket have been extended through June 14 as upgrade work continues, according to the latest notice.

The three underpasses will be closed each night from 8pm to 6am. The notice extends work at the Darasamut and Samkong underpasses, which had previously been scheduled for completion by May 31.

The Phuket Highways Office said the project is part of the development of a Smart City Remote Control and Monitoring Centre for Phuket’s underpass network. The work includes removing ageing lighting systems and installing new electrical systems with remote power outage notification technology.

Crews are also installing automatic licence plate recognition cameras and upgrading traffic signs to internet-connected variable message systems.

The project covers five locations: the Phuket Airport Underpass, where work has already been completed; the Bang Khu, Samkong and Darasamut underpasses, which are now being upgraded; and the Chalong Underpass.

Officials said the improvements are intended to strengthen traffic management, safety and monitoring across key transport routes in Phuket.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the affected underpasses during closure hours and use alternative routes where possible. The Phuket Highways Office apologised for inconvenience caused by the overnight work.

The project is being overseen by Senior Civil Engineer Sanakorn Thabthimthongsuk.
