Phuket exhibition showcases products made by inmates

An exhibition featuring handicrafts and other products made by inmates at 25 correctional facilities across southern Thailand is being held at Saphan Hin in Phuket until Oct 31.

The 20th Exhibition of Correctional Products from 14 Southern Provinces features goods produced through vocational training programmes at facilities under Corrections Regions 8 and 9. Residents and tourists can buy the products, with proceeds supporting vocational development and opportunities for inmates to establish livelihoods after completing their sentences.

Yutthana Nakruangsri, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections, presided over the opening ceremony on Oct 23. Phuket Deputy Governor Romdon Haji-Awae delivered the welcome address, while Phuket Provincial Prison Warden Parinya Srithanyakaew and other officials attended.

Romdon said hosting the exhibition provided an opportunity to showcase inmates’ work and demonstrate how vocational training can prepare them for life after release. Parinya said the event aimed to highlight the department’s rehabilitation work and encourage public acceptance of former inmates by demonstrating their skills and capacity for self-improvement.

The programmes are intended to give inmates practical experience for lawful employment and stable livelihoods after their sentences. The exhibition also supports Phuket’s priorities in economic growth, tourism and public participation by inviting residents and visitors to support the initiative through their purchases.

An awards ceremony was held to recognise organisations and individuals who contributed to the exhibition and the inaugural Southern Corrections Muay Thai Championship.
