Phuket Fishing Port plans upgrades and regional seafood hub
Officials are considering infrastructure upgrades, rooftop solar panels and expanded seafood-handling capacity at Phuket Fishing Port in Ratsada.
Plans to upgrade Phuket Fishing Port in Ratsada include infrastructure improvements, rooftop solar panels and more flexible use of the site, as officials consider developing it into a regional seafood hub.
The proposals were discussed during a visit to the Fish Marketing Organisation (FMO) at the port. Officials examined ways to improve operations according to seasonal demand, including increasing seafood-unloading capacity during peak fishing periods and finding alternative uses for the site during quieter months to generate additional income.
According to officials, Phuket is Thailand’s second highest-earning fish marketing organisation, generating about B15-20 million in annual revenue. Any expansion would require consultation with relevant government agencies to comply with existing laws and development plans.
Officials also discussed the possibility of accommodating more tuna fishing vessels once navigation issues affecting the port are resolved. Damaged vessels currently occupying berths were another issue, with the Marine Department, Department of Fisheries and other agencies continuing to coordinate on the outstanding problems.
