Phuket hosts ‘Connecting Hearts’ youth programme

The 46th batch of the ‘Connecting Hearts’ youth programme was formally welcomed at Phuket Provincial Hall on Thursday, April 16, with senior Phuket officials and organisers greeting youth participants and their host families. The initiative, which began in 2005, brings young people from Thailand’s southern border provinces to live with host families across Phuket City, Kathu, and Thalang districts for over a month. The programme aims to broaden participants’ life experiences and foster mutual understanding through daily immersion and skill-building activities.

Programme Structure and Local Involvement

Eighteen host families in Phuket are taking part in this year’s exchange, accommodating youth across three districts. Organisers emphasised the importance of thorough preparation, including careful host family selection, training, and readiness programmes for both hosts and participants.

Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn encouraged the youth to use the opportunity to expand their perspectives and understand diverse ways of life. He highlighted the role of young people in shaping a strong and sustainable society.

Environmental Learning and Sustainability Focus

This year’s Phuket programme features an environmental education component, reflecting the province’s commitment to sustainability. Participants were introduced to ‘Oklin’ food waste disposal technology at Phuket Provincial Hall, which can process food waste within 24 hours and convert it into organic fertiliser or soil conditioner.

Officials said the session aimed to raise awareness of waste-related issues, including pollution, odour, and greenhouse gas emissions. The activity supports Phuket’s ‘Zero Waste’ campaign and encourages responsible resource management among youth.

By integrating environmental learning with cultural exchange, organisers hope participants will bring these lessons back to their communities, promoting sustainable practices and long-term behavioural change.
