Phuket police said Tuesday, May 5, that officers examining a drug case tied to a shipment bound for Australia found 6.198 kilograms of heroin hidden in traditional Thai clothing. Wichit Police and forensic officers were handling evidence linked to charges of possession and attempted export of Category 1 narcotics after a joint operation intercepted suspicious parcels sent through a private courier service.
Parcels traced from Loei to an address near Phuket Airport
Police said the packages originated in Loei Province and were addressed to a housing estate near Phuket Airport.
The shipment contained two sacks packed with 48 sets of ready-made Thai garments. Officers made the initial seizure on April 30 after discovering the heroin concealed inside the clothing.
Investigators said traffickers planned to hire couriers to move the drugs onward to Australia. They valued the heroin in Thailand at 300,000 to 500,000 baht per kilogram, while saying the street price in Australia could rise to ten times the domestic rate and reach millions.
Forensic teams are collecting latent fingerprints from the garments and packaging to identify suspects. Police said the evidence will be sent to court to seek arrest warrants under Thai law.
