Phuket targets 20 August completion for tunnel lighting repairs

Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom has ordered accelerated tunnel lighting repairs, stronger road-safety measures and increased surveillance at Sarasin Bridge following public concern about safety in the province.

Two of Phuket’s five underpasses are still awaiting lighting upgrades. Work is being carried out between 9pm and 6am to avoid disrupting daytime traffic, with all tunnel lighting systems expected to be operational by 20 August 2026.

Chotnarin, accompanied by provincial transport officials, public health representatives and highway authorities, also reviewed traffic management measures. He said adjustments to U-turn lanes at Hua To had improved traffic flow.

Phuket recorded approximately 110 traffic fatalities in the first half of 2026, according to the report. If the trend continues, annual deaths could exceed 200, which would represent a 50% increase from last year.

The provincial road safety committee is implementing a five-pronged strategy that includes public education and awareness campaigns.

Security will also be strengthened at Sarasin Bridge, where recent incidents involving people jumping into the water have raised concern. Patrol units will monitor the area more closely, supported by the “Phuket Eye” surveillance system, which integrates more than 700 CCTV cameras. Highway patrols near Tha Chat Chai will also reinforce security.

Chotnarin said Phuket was accelerating tunnel repairs, tightening accident-prevention measures and enhancing surveillance at Sarasin Bridge to support safer travel for residents and tourists.
