Phuket to hold motorcycle safety caravan on 1 November
A motorcycle safety caravan will travel through Phuket’s three districts as authorities promote helmet use and stricter compliance with traffic laws.
Phuket will hold a motorcycle safety caravan through Mueang Phuket, Kathu and Thalang districts on 1 November to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Vice Governor Romdon Hayiawae said.
The procession will start at Phuket Provincial Hall after an opening ceremony and a joint declaration of commitment to road safety. Authorities have not yet finalised the route, detailed schedule or number of motorcycles taking part.
The campaign will promote helmet use, discourage drink-driving and speeding, and address dangerous behaviour including driving against traffic. Officials also discussed stricter law enforcement and urged government personnel to set an example by wearing helmets when riding or travelling as passengers on motorcycles.
The plans were discussed at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on Thursday, 22 October, chaired by Romdon on behalf of Governor Chotinarin Kerdsom. Senior police officers, military representatives, disaster prevention officials and other agencies attended.
Participating agencies have been tasked with coordinating traffic management, procession safety and emergency medical support.
Figures from the Phuket office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation show 154 deaths and 22,102 injuries in road accidents on the island, underscoring the scale of the road-safety problem addressed by the campaign.
