Phuket will host the Andaman Sustainable Tourism Festival at Laem Phromthep Viewpoint from Aug 28-30, with free admission and more than 60 shops, restaurants, community products and handicraft stalls on display.
The event was announced at a press conference at Central Phuket on Tuesday, Aug 18. Phuket Governor Chotinrin Kerdsum joined representatives of government agencies, tourism organisations, local government and the private sector for the announcement.
Organisers said the initiative aims to strengthen tourism links between Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun by developing sustainable routes that connect attractions with local identities and communities. The project is also intended to increase community participation in tourism, distribute tourism income more widely and support the conservation of natural resources and the environment.
The wider programme includes sustainable tourism management training for tourism personnel, operators and community leaders, along with marine conservation activities involving local communities. It also includes two-day, one-night tourism routes linking Phuket with Phang Nga and Krabi with Trang.
The festival will feature community products, arts and crafts, workshops, food, drinks, live music and performances. Artists scheduled to appear include Earth Patrawee, Whal & Dolph and Renisara, with different performers taking the stage each day.
The Phuket Provincial Tourism and Sports Office said the project is intended to help the Andaman tourism development zone remain competitive while attracting visitors interested in responsible tourism.
