Russian tourist dies in Rama 2 crash on motorcycle rented in Phuket

A Russian tourist died after his motorcycle collided with a 10-wheel truck on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon province, while he was riding a bike rented from a business in Phuket.

The Sri Samut Rescue Foundation reported the crash on 2 August. It occurred opposite Wipharam Hospital, where rescuers found the rider with critical injuries. He was taken to Samut Sakhon Hospital and later died. The case was reported to Mueang Samut Sakhon Police Station for investigation.

Police confirmed that the white Honda Click involved had Phuket registration plates and belonged to a motorcycle rental business in Nai Yang, Thalang district. The crash site is more than 700 kilometres from Phuket, a journey that typically takes more than 12 hours by motorcycle.

The Phuket Times Facebook page later shared what it described as the rental agreement. The document said the tourist rented the motorcycle at about 1pm on 22 July and was due to return it on 22 August. The rental fee was B4,000, with a B1,000 deposit.

Police believe the rider may have been travelling towards Bangkok, although his intended destination has not been confirmed. Authorities have not officially identified him and are trying to locate relatives or friends before arrangements are made to return his body to Russia.
