Thai PM orders crackdown on indecent tourist behavior after Phuket cases

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on May 9 ordered a crackdown on indecent tourist behavior after a string of public misconduct cases, including incidents in Phuket. The government said laws would be strictly enforced against foreigners accused of violating Thai cultural values or using illegal drugs, with deportation and blacklisting for those found to have committed immoral acts.

Deportations, visa revocations follow public indecency cases

In Patong, a Spanish man and a Peruvian woman were arrested and deported after confessing to having sex in a moving tuk-tuk, officials said.

Authorities also revoked the visas of a French couple and blacklisted them after video of them having sex on a beach spread online.

The latest push followed further complaints from Pattaya, where witnesses reported 4 separate couples engaging in public indecency in the sea earlier this week.

Another Pattaya case involved a tourist who was seriously injured while attempting a backflip from the roof bars of a moving songthaew.

Deputy government spokesman Ploytalay Laksmisangchan said the prime minister had instructed relevant agencies to step up checks at entertainment venues to maintain public order and protect the country’s tourism image.

Government figures showed international tourist arrivals fell 7% in April from the same month last year.
