Thai prime minister orders deportation of Israeli man convicted over threats to Koh Samui zoo owner
Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered the deportation of Yaacov Ohayon after his conviction for criminal intimidation by the Koh Samui Provincial Court.
Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered the deportation of Israeli citizen Yaacov Ohayon after his conviction for criminal intimidation by the Koh Samui Provincial Court, The Phuket Express reported.
The case involved threatening messages that reportedly caused a Koh Samui zoo owner to fear for their safety. Ohayon was convicted under Section 392 of the Thai Penal Code and initially sentenced to one month in prison and fined B10,000.
The court reduced the punishment by half under Section 78 because of his confession, resulting in 15 days’ imprisonment and a B5,000 fine. The prison sentence was suspended for two years.
Despite the suspended sentence, the Interior Ministry determined that Ohayon’s conduct was harmful to public order and morality. It cited Section 5 of the Deportation Act 1956 and related regulations in support of his removal from Thailand.
Ohayon may appeal the deportation order by petitioning the prime minister within seven days under Section 8 of the Deportation Act.
