Thailand Reports Total of 191 Deaths in Five Days of Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road Campaign

Thailand reported 191 deaths and 911 injuries from 951 road accidents nationwide during the first five days of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road campaign, which runs from April 10 to 16, 2026. The annual campaign, which includes Phuket, aims to reduce traffic fatalities during the holiday period.

Phrae province recorded the highest number of accidents with 45 cases and 47 injuries, while Bangkok saw the most fatalities at 16 deaths. On April 14 alone, authorities logged 192 accidents, 202 injuries, and 30 deaths.

Speeding accounted for 38.54% of all incidents, making it the leading cause, followed by drunk driving at 28.13%. Motorcycles were involved in 72.88% of crashes, with most incidents occurring on straight routes and local village roads.

Comparison With Previous Year

During the corresponding early Songkran period in 2025, authorities documented approximately 1,002 accidents, 999 to 1,002 injuries, and between 138 and 144 fatalities over four days.

This year’s five-day total shows a slight decrease in accidents and injuries but a notable rise in deaths compared to the previous year’s early Songkran figures. The peak accident window was between 3:01 PM and 6:00 PM, and most victims were aged 20 to 29, officials said.
