TMD warns of heavy rain in Phuket as thunderstorms expected across 60% of area
Thailand’s meteorological agency has warned of heavy rain in Phuket, with thunderstorms expected across 60% of the province and rougher seas in storm areas.
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms across 60% of Phuket, with some heavy rain expected in the province over the next 24 hours.
In its forecast from 6pm Friday, June 19 to 6pm Saturday, June 20, the department said Phuket would be among the Andaman provinces likely to see heavy rain, along with Krabi, Trang and Satun. Minimum temperatures were forecast at 23-26 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures of 32-35 degrees Celsius.
The department said the weather conditions were being driven by a moderate southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure cell covering upper Vietnam.
Residents in affected areas were advised to be cautious of heavy and accumulated rainfall, with risks including flash floods and forest runoff, particularly near waterways and in low-lying areas.
For waters off Phuket and northward, southwest winds were forecast at 15-35 kilometres per hour, with waves at 1-2 metres and higher than 2 metres in thunderstorm areas. The department advised all ships in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to proceed with caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm areas.
The broader warning also covered parts of eastern Thailand, the lower South, Bangkok and surrounding areas, where heavy rain was also forecast.
