UPDATE: Driver charged after two killed in Thalang pickup crash
Police have charged a Myanmar man after a pickup truck struck motorcycles in Thalang, Phuket, killing two people and injuring two others.
A Myanmar man has been charged with drink-driving causing death after a pickup truck struck motorcycles in Thalang, Phuket, killing two people and injuring two others.
The crash happened at about 7.30pm on 25 July on the road to Ton Sai Waterfall in Moo 1, Thep Krasattri subdistrict. Thalang police found a black Suzuki pickup registered in Phuket and four damaged motorcycles at the scene.
Police identified the driver as Aung Min Oo, 42. The motorcycles included a black Honda Click ridden by Thanawit Inkaew, 24; a blue Honda Scoopy ridden by Kanit, 60; a Honda Wave ridden by Niran, 36; and a red Honda Wave registered in Ranong ridden by Mariam, 45.
According to the preliminary investigation, the pickup was travelling from Ton Sai Waterfall towards Thalang when it struck Thanawit's motorcycle, which was travelling towards the waterfall. Police said the driver continued for about 100 metres before crashing into motorcycles parked outside roadside shops.
Four people were taken to Thalang Hospital. At 9.40pm, the hospital told police that Thanawit and Mariam had died from their injuries. Kanit and Niran were injured.
Police took Aung Min Oo to Thalang Police Station for an alcohol test, which recorded 239 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. He was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing the deaths of others.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
