Urak Lawoi families from across Phuket gathered at Laem Tukkae Village Hall last Sunday, Apr 26, for a family reunion focused on sea gypsy culture and shared heritage. The event brought together descendants from across the island in a public celebration aimed at protecting cultural identity and building wider understanding of Urak Lawoi traditions.
Village head Wirat Pramongkit opened the ceremony and outlined the history of the Laem Tukkae community. He said the reunion was intended to strengthen ties among descendants and help pass traditional customs to younger generations.
Parade brings together five sea gypsy communities
A parade representing five sea gypsy communities formed the centerpiece of the event. Participants wore brightly coloured traditional clothing as live traditional music accompanied the procession.
The performance drew attention from visitors and local media. Organisers said the turnout showed the strength of community bonds and a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
Food, crafts and history underline cultural identity
Stalls around the venue displayed local products and traditional foods, including handmade pearl and seashell jewellery, batik fabrics, fresh seafood and hand-ground curry pastes. Traditional desserts such as Pom Pom, also known locally as Pok Ka Tu Yo, were especially popular.
The Urak Lawoi are one of Phuket’s indigenous ethnic groups and have long been connected to the sea, with fishing historically serving as their main livelihood. Organisers said gatherings like the reunion help reinforce unity while raising public awareness of a way of life that has endured despite rapid development across the island.
Members of the community were formally granted Thai surnames under a royal initiative, affirming their status as Thai citizens while recognising their distinct cultural heritage.
