Video of tourist skateboarder holding moving tuk-tuk in Patong raises safety concerns
A Facebook video showing a tourist skateboarding on Thaweewong Rd in Patong while holding onto a moving tuk-tuk has triggered online concern about road safety risks.
A video posted on Facebook on Saturday, July 4, has raised road safety concerns after showing a tourist skateboarding along Thaweewong Rd in Patong late on Friday night.
The footage, shared by user “Matthew Patong”, shows the tourist balancing on a skateboard on the busy road before reaching out to grab the back of a moving tuk-tuk to increase speed. The post carried the caption: “Falling isn’t so bad… but the pain of having someone waiting to run over him!”
The 19-second clip quickly drew attention online, with many commenters expressing alarm about the risks involved. Social media users warned that if the skateboarder had fallen, or if the tuk-tuk driver had braked suddenly, the incident could have caused serious injuries to the tourist and other motorists.
Commenters also said such behaviour could harm Phuket’s reputation as a safe tourist destination and called for stronger action against reckless conduct on public roads. Road users urged visitors to respect Thailand’s traffic laws and avoid using skateboards on busy roads or holding onto moving vehicles, saying the practice poses a danger to everyone sharing the road.
It was not immediately clear whether police had identified the tourist or whether any action would be taken over the incident.
