Phuket governor extends weather warning as heavy rain and rough seas persist

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has extended a weather warning after the Thai Meteorological Department forecast heavy to very heavy rain and rough seas across Phuket from today through Thursday, May 19-22. The alert cites an intensifying low-pressure system near Myanmar and a strengthening southwest monsoon, with officials warning of flash floods, runoff and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.

Waves top 3 meters in storm areas

The upper Andaman Sea is expected to see waves of two to three metres, rising above three metres in storm areas, officials said. Small boats have been advised to remain ashore during the warning period.

Beach safety measures were tightened island-wide, with red flags raised at several beaches, including Patong. Lifeguards warned swimmers to stay out of the water because monsoon surf has generated dangerous rip currents.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation urged people to monitor conditions closely, obey beach warning flags and avoid risky water activities. The agency said double red flags mean extremely dangerous swimming conditions and entering the sea is strictly prohibited.

Storm damage hits roads, homes and power lines

Heavy rain and strong winds have already caused damage in several parts of the island since Sunday night. In Patong, municipal workers were sent to Phetchakood Rd to remove trees that fell onto houses, and officials inspected affected homes for possible disaster relief assistance.

Emergency crews also handled reports of fallen trees blocking roads and damaging power lines in Phuket Town, Sri Soonthorn, Chalong, Mai Khao and Pa Khlok. In Soi Kluai Mai Thai in Chalong, disaster officials cut away trees that had collapsed onto electricity lines to remove electrocution risks and reopen access.

Phuket City Municipality said crews worked through the night clearing large fallen trees from roads and residential areas in Talad Nuea and Talad Yai. Rawai Municipality said four major drainage improvement projects are under way in flood-prone areas to reduce recurring flooding in low-lying communities.
