Phuket organ donor gives eight patients new hope

The family of Yutthana Chamroenwong has donated his organs and eyes to help patients awaiting transplants, with the donation carried out on July 15 at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Medical teams retrieved the organs and eyes at the hospital in Phuket Town before police escorted them to Phuket International Airport. The donations were then flown to Bangkok for transplant procedures.

The transport operation involved officers from Phuket City, Thalang and Sakhu police stations, working with Vachira Phuket Hospital’s Eye and Organ Donation Centre, Airports of Thailand and Nok Air. The organisations coordinated the transfer to meet the strict time limits required for successful transplantation.

Officials said a single organ donor can save or improve the lives of up to eight people. They also thanked motorists who made way for the convoy.

In a separate statement, Vachira Phuket Hospital said Mr Yutthana’s family donated both of his corneas to the Thai Red Cross Society Eye Bank. The hospital said it was the fifth eye donation received during fiscal year 2026.

Hospital staff expressed condolences to the Chamroenwong family and thanked them for the decision, describing it as a compassionate act that could restore sight and improve the quality of life of patients waiting for corneal transplants. The family also gave permission for Mr Yutthana’s name to be published in recognition of his final act of generosity.
