Saphan Hin fly infestation prompts health concerns and calls for urgent action
Residents in Saphan Hin say a fly infestation is disrupting homes, schools and food businesses, while health concerns and calls for urgent official intervention are growing.
Residents in the Saphan Hin area have complained of a large fly infestation, saying swarms are disrupting daily life, hygiene and local businesses.
Complaints were raised on May 26, with residents reporting that restaurants and food vendors had been heavily affected. According to residents, some customers were avoiding establishments because flies were contamining food and dining areas. Some families also said the conditions had become so severe that they were unable to eat comfortably at home.
Residents voiced concern about the possible spread of disease, warning that flies can transmit diarrhoea, food poisoning and other gastrointestinal illnesses, particularly among children and elderly people. Schools and other vulnerable residents in the area were also said to be directly affected.
Initial public health advice shared with residents included keeping food and drinking water covered, maintaining cleanliness around homes and rubbish bins, washing hands regularly and seeking medical treatment if symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting or fever develop.
The issue was also raised by Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee, who appealed for urgent intervention from authorities. In his statement, Mr Chalermpong said businesses were suffering as flies continually infested food, discouraging customers and affecting livelihoods.
"The most important thing is the health, safety and quality of life of the residents," he said.
He called on the Phuket Governor, local administrative organisations, public health officials and other relevant agencies to investigate the source of the infestation and urgently implement measures to bring the situation under control before it worsens.
So far, no official explanation for the source of the infestation has been announced.
