Twin brothers arrested over alleged durian thefts and assault in Karon
Two 34-year-old brothers from Phang Nga were arrested in Karon over alleged durian thefts and an assault on a fruit-stall owner.
Twin brothers from Phang Nga were arrested in Karon on 19 August over alleged durian thefts and an assault on a fruit-stall owner, police said.
Wirat Salerat and Wira Salerat, both 34, were detained at a PTT service station at about 4.30pm. Police said they were wanted under arrest warrants for allegedly committing theft at night, using a vehicle to facilitate the theft or transport stolen property and evade arrest, and jointly assaulting another person, causing physical or mental harm.
The case began with a complaint filed by stall owner Worawut Kumla on 19 July. He told police that two men allegedly stole 15 durians, worth about B4,000, from his stall at the traffic-light intersection on Luang Pho Chuan Road in Karon at about 1am that day.
Police said the same suspects allegedly returned at about 1.50am on 21 July to steal more fruit. Worawut discovered them and tried to stop them, but the men allegedly assaulted him and fled.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from the stall and nearby areas and identified a blue Honda Wave motorbike registered in Phang Nga that was allegedly used in the incidents. Police said the vehicle was traced to the brothers.
Police also said both men had previous records involving theft, assault and drug-related offences. Further investigation indicated that they might have been involved in fruit thefts in other areas, causing losses to residents and businesses.
The brothers were taken to Karon Police Station for questioning and legal proceedings. Police said they would continue investigating possible links to other theft cases.
